District Convention

Posted by Wapello Warbler on June 29, 2009

Last week, I gave a short preview of the Iowa District East convention.  In the rest of this post, I’ll provide an overview of the actions taken by the delegates.

First, the delegates decided to continue requiring that it’s presidents serve full-time.  The continuance of this policy had strong support from Dr. Arp, who was retiring.  The delegates decisions throughout the weekend seemed to reflect the opinion that reducing district staffing was not the best solution to the current financial problems.

Our new district president will be the Rev. Brian Saunders, pastor of our sister congregation in Muscatine, Iowa.  Pastor Saunders was installed at the end of this weekend’s convention, but won’t assume his duties until August.

The district vice presidents are Pastor Matthew Rueger and Pastor Dan Krueger.  They will serve part time and assist the district president as he requests.

Pastor Mike Scudder of Mt. Pleasant received more votes than Pastor Hinkle and was elected as the pastoral delegate to the board of directors. Pastor Mark Brasse of Fairfield was elected as secretary to the board.

There was also an extensive presentation from the synod’s task force on structure.  They presented some general recommendations and asked for feedback from the delegates.  They will prepare their final report after reviewing the suggestions received from all of the districts.  After the report is completed, there will be a series of planning sessions with those chosen as delegates to next year’s national convention.  The results of those sessions will go to a floor committee which will draft the resolutions that will be presented to the convention action.  Our district resolved to request that the proposed resolutions be completed in time for the convention workbook and that no action be taken to implement them until 2013.

Our district convention also approved a capital funding campaign by Camp IODISECA and urged our congregations to help the church in Palanga, Lithuania complete its building.

You’ll find official coverage of the convention here.
